MileagePlus

MileagePlus is the frequent flyer program of the U.S. airline United Airlines.

History

The foundation of the program resulted from the Airline Deregulation Act of the United States of 1978 and the resulting increase in competitive pressure. In response to the founding of the AAdvantage frequent flyer program of American Airlines on May 1, 1981, a week it was later launched Mileage Plus. The programs were similar in many respects very much. In contrast to AAdvantage participants, however, were Mileage Plus to log a 5,000 -mile bonus, also fell not miles. In this respect, the plus in the name of Mileage Plus should be understood as an allusion towards the benefits.

After the merger between United Airlines and Continental Airlines in 2011, it is on June 29, 2011 under the name of MileagePlus, instead of previously Mileage Plus, the program of the new United. 3 March 2012, the frequent flyer program, OnePass, Continental Airlines, as well as the Panamanian Copa Airlines and its subsidiary Copa Airlines Colombia from Colombia has been integrated in MileagePlus.

Status level

To reward frequent flyers and to create incentives for loyalty, various status levels were introduced in 1987. To achieve a state level a certain number of status miles to be flown, which Premier Qualifying Miles ( PQM ) will be called within one calendar year. Alternatively, the status by a defined number of flight segments, the Premier qualifying segments ( PQS), can be achieved. Beginning in 2014 also a minimum amount ( Premier qualifying dollar = PQD ) must be implemented for the qualification. After reaching a state level, the participant receives various privileges such as the use of a priority check in, lounge access or free upgrades.

Premier Silver

To reach the Premier Silver status (2P ) within a calendar year 25.000 miles ( PQM ) or 30 PQS must be achieved. Starting with 2014 also needs to be implemented, an amount of at least U.S. $ 2,500 to United tickets. Advantages of the Premier Silver status include use of the preferred check- ins, free upgrades to Economy Plus Class on United from 24 hours before departure, and the Star Alliance Silver status and a 25% bonus BA Miles.

Premier Gold

To reach the Premier Gold status ( 1P), to be achieved within a calendar year 50.000 miles ( PQM ) or 60 PQS. From 2014, in addition, an amount of at least U.S. $ 5,000 to United Tickets must be implemented. Benefits of Premier Gold status include all the benefits of Silver status, as well as Star Alliance Gold status and lounge access and a 50% bonus BA Miles.

Premier Platinum

To reach the Premier Platinum status ( PP), to be achieved within a calendar year 75.000 miles ( PQM ) or 90 PQS. From 2014, in addition, an amount of at least U.S. $ 7,500 to United Tickets must be implemented. Advantages of the Premier Platinum status include all the benefits of Gold status, as well as a higher upgrade priority, two regional upgrade voucher and a bonus of 75 % on award miles. Based on the OnePass program of Continental Airlines this status level was introduced in 2012.

Premier 1K

To reach the Premier Platinum status ( 1K), to be achieved within a calendar year 100.000 miles ( PQM ) or 120 PQS. From 2014, in addition, an amount of at least U.S. $ 10,000 to United Tickets must be implemented. Benefits of Premier 1K status include all the benefits of Platinum status, as well as a higher upgrade priority, six international upgrade voucher redeemable on United and Lufthansa, two other regional upgrade voucher and a bonus of 100 % on award miles. As an additional advantage is a free application for Global Entry program.

Trivia

  • As the first participants of the MileagePlus program reached Tom Stuker 9 July 2011 on a flight from Los Angeles to Chicago the mark of 10 million miles flown. He was unprecedented Titanium status awarded.
  • The first such loyalty program was established in 1979 by Texas International.
