History

Even the people of the pre-and early history were aware of the strategic importance of the bottleneck at the Main knee between the Odenwald and Spessart and built powerful ringwalls on the Greinberg above Miltenberg and on the Bürgstadter mountain. To 155 AD, the Romans included here the running almost straight south " front Limes" on the Main. In the vicinity of today's Miltenberg, the Limes came across the Main, the further north from here represented the natural border of the Roman Empire back to Germania. There are the remains of two Roman forts between Miltenberg and small Heubach ( fort Miltenberg -Altstadt, ORL 38 ) and between Miltenberg and Bürgstadt ( fort Miltenberg -Ost, ORL 38a).

With the fall of the Limes in the middle of the 3rd century, the forts lost their function of border security. The fort Miltenberg -Altstadt, however, was still inhabited in the 4th century, as evidenced by the discovery of coins. For the 5th century, no reliable evidence of settlements can provide. From the 7th century, possibly as early as the 6th century the Roman ruins were inhabited again. In the east corner of the former Kastelles a mortar wall was built at that time taking advantage of the Roman wall. Spores findings suggest that high-status persons and suggest that the castle was connected with the Frankish colonization of the East. In the following centuries the plant was hardly used until, in turn, a residential tower was built in the 12th century in the eastern corner of the old castle. This could have been traded to the seat of the noble family Wallenhausen who testified shortly thereafter here.

Under the protection of Mildenburg (built around 1200), the city developed Miltenberg. It was first mentioned in writing in 1237. From about 1379 limited the city's two towers, the Mainz and Würzburg Gate, stretched long and narrow between the river and hillside grown today's Old Town area to the west and east. In the Middle Ages the Miltenberger sandstone was highly sought after. Therefore, objects such as grinding stones were carved or columns in the surrounding woods. Even before 1319, the hospital of St. Peter was founded by Archbishop Peter of Aspelt.

Until 1803 Miltenberg belonged to Electoral Mainz. This manifests itself today in the Wheel of Mainz in the city coat of arms. After Reichsdeputationshauptschluss Miltenberg came to the Principality of Leiningen, with which it was in 1806 the Grand Duchy of Baden incorporated. After the city from 1810 belonged to the Grand Duchy of Hesse -Darmstadt, she finally was in 1816 part of the Kingdom of Bavaria.

From Miltenberg, the so-called Heunensäulen that were intended for the construction of the Mainz Cathedral originate. Is the middle of the Mainz Cathedral Square today one of these Heunesäulen with a corresponding billboard.

Miltenberg has a historic center, which has numerous half-timbered houses. In the years 1912 and 1955, Miltenberg acquired land on the right side of the Main to the expansion of the city. The Mildenburg is since 1979 owned by the town of Miltenberg, 1971, renovated in the outer parts, a perennial scale renovation and restoration was completed in 2011. In the castle interior now houses a museum with art collections in the diocese of Würzburg. In the courtyard before the Tout Onen stone stood (now the Municipal Museum ), a five-meter high sandstone column, the inscription is to this day a mystery to their significance.

In 2006, the city reached national prominence when the Catholic priest Ulrich Boom let it ring for 20 minutes the bells of the church James Miltenberger and prevented a rally of the NPD youth organization.
