6 districts

Center is the first borough of Berlin and has approximately 335,000 inhabitants. It is the central district of the capital city and home to most of the constitutional organs of the Federal Republic.

Districts

On 1 January 2001, the three former districts of Mitte, Tiergarten and Wedding merged to become the new district center. He is one of two districts (next Friedrichshain- Kreuzberg), which consist of parts of the former East and West Berlin. In common parlance center still referred to today's district of Berlin-Mitte and not the new Fusion district.

The majority of the district is relatively densely populated, with an average population density that is twice as high as in general in Berlin. An exception is the Tiergarten district, whose population density is only half as high as that of Berlin. The Hansa district is the smallest area of ​​the district among the 96 districts of Berlin.

Population

31 October 2013, the district center counted 336 195 inhabitants in an area of 39.5 square kilometers. Thus, the population density was 8,518 at the date inhabitants per square kilometer. On 31 December 2012, the proportion of foreigners was 28.2 percent, while the share of the population were of immigrant background on the record date at 46.6 percent. Both values ​​were, respectively, the highest in all districts of Berlin. The unemployment rate amounted on 30 April 2013, 14.1 percent. On 31 December 2012, the average age of the population was 39.1 years.

Policy

District mayor of middle is Christian Hanke (SPD ), who was elected in 2006 as a Zählgemeinschaft the SPD with the voices of the council of the Left and the FDP against the CDU and the Greens to the district mayor. Coat of arms

The coat of arms of the district center was named after the district merger of three districts Mitte (old district), Tiergarten and Wedding by the heraldist Theodor Lorenz ( born April 6, 1929 † 25 March 2005) re-designed and decorated. The current coat of arms was granted on 9 October 2001 by the Senate of Berlin.
