Pankow [ Panko ː ] is the third borough of Berlin and has approximately 370,000 inhabitants. Until the administrative reform in 2001, there was a smaller district of Pankow; this was merged with the former boroughs of Prenzlauer Berg and Weissensee for now the most populous districts of Berlin.

Geography

Pankow is located in the northeast of Berlin, bordering the districts of Lichtenberg, Friedrichshain - Kreuzberg, Mitte and Reinickendorf as well as the counties of Upper Havel and Barnim in Brandenburg.

The district lies almost entirely on the glacially formed Barnim plateau of which is flat here, flat to undulating. For the most part the landscape consists moraine. Along the Panke also a Sander moves north, south to the Berlin glacial valley.

History

County from 1920 to 1938

The western part of the rural community including Wilhelmsruh Rosenthal came to the district Reinickendorf. After its most populous district of the district was given the name Pankow. District of Pankow from 1938 to end of 2000

In 1938 it came to Berlin for a reform of the district boundaries. The area to the west of Berlin's northern runway at the Wollankstraße was reclassified from Pankow district in the district of Wedding. GDR government seat
