Mojkovac

Mojkovac (Cyrillic Мојковац ) is a small town in northern Montenegro. It has about 4,100 inhabitants and is situated on the middle course of Tara, about 65 kilometers north of Podgorica. Mojkovac is the capital of the homonymous municipality with 10,300 inhabitants and an area of 367 km ². The city is also the tourist center of the National Park Biogradska Gora and a station on the railway line Belgrade - Bar.

By Mojkovac the river Tara, whose canyon is the largest in Europe and the second largest in the world after the gorge of the river Colorado in the USA flows.

Mojkovac 1916 was the scene of the Battle of Mojkovac between the troops of Austria-Hungary and Montenegro, led by Serdar Janko Vukotić, which is therefore honored with a large statue in the market square of the city.

History

The church today Mojkovac is composed of the former municipalities Polya and Mojkovac, these were merged in 1955 with the restructuring of municipalities.

Naming

The name Mojkovac is composed of the Serbian words moj, Kovani and Novac. Translated into German, this means My forged Taler, in reference to the 12th century, when the present town Brskovo silver coins were forged.

Population

At the 2011 census the municipality had 8,622 Mojkovac inhabitants, of whom described themselves 5,097 ( 59.12 %) and Montenegrins and 3,058 ( 35.47 %) than Serbs. Besides living in the community are other smaller groups.

Traffic

Mojkovac is a junction in the road network of northern Montenegro. With the capital Podgorica, it is connected by the E 65 / E 80, which leads (84 km) on Kolasin and through the valley of Morača. In addition, an important regional road leads through the gorge of the containers to Zabljak (73 km) and Pljevlja (81 km). In addition Mojkovac has a station on the railway line Belgrade - Bar.

Sports

Mojkovac has a local handball club, RK Brskovo Mojkovac, who plays in the first Montenegrin league.

The FK Brskovo Mojkovac plays in the third Montenegrin League North.
