Montgesoye

Montgesoye is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Montgesoye is located on 356 m above sea level, 4 km southeast of Ornans, some 21 km south-southeast of the city of Besançon ( straight line ). The village is located in the Jura, in the valley of the Loue at the mouth of Ruisseau de Vaux, framed by the projections of the surrounding plateau.

The area of ​​11:06 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the western French Jura. The central part of the area is occupied by the valley of the Loue. The river flows here in a slightly tortuous passage through a roughly one -kilometer-wide flat alluvial plain from southeast to northwest. The erosion is around 250 meters deep into the surrounding plateau. In the area of Montgesoye the Loue has several short side valleys, which are also deeply incised into the plateau, in the north of the valley of the Ruisseau de Cornebouche, in the east that of the Ruisseau de Vaux. In between, there are striking projections of the plateau. The steep slopes of the Loue and its side valleys are various places crowned at the top of distinctive rock faces a tough layer of lime. In the west the municipality area extends to the height of the Bois de la soue and to the edge of the plateau of Amancey. Here the highest elevation of Montgesoye is achieved with 624 m. East of the village are the heights of the sur Bois Roche ( to 600 m).

Neighboring communities of Montgesoye are Saules and Durnes in the north, Vuillafans in the east, Château Vieux- les -Fosses and Chantrans in the south and Ornans in the West.

History

The beginnings of Montgesoye go back to the 9th century. A powerful noble family was resident here. The Lords of Montgesoye are also regarded as the founder of the monastery Mouthier -Haute -Pierre. With the establishment of the new, more strategically located castle Château Vieux, the center of rule shifted the High Middle Ages to the neighboring Château Vieux. The old castle of Montgesoye was destroyed in 1636, but later rebuilt. Together with the Franche -Comté Montgesoye came with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France. Today Montgesoye is a member of the 24 localities comprehensive community association Communauté de communes du Pays d' Ornans.

Attractions

The single village church of Montgesoye dates from the 15th century but was extensively rebuilt in 1763 with the inclusion of the Gothic choir. From the medieval castle Montgesoye the foundations of a tower from the 9th century and a Renaissance portal are only preserved. Today at the site is a building of 1890. Population

With 482 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Montgesoye one of the small communities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1881 600 people were still counted ), a significant population increase has been recorded in recent years.

Economy and infrastructure

Montgesoye was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) embossed village.
