Chassagne-Saint-Denis

Chassagne -Saint -Denis is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Chassagne -Saint- Denis is located at 560 m above sea level, about four kilometers southwest of Ornans and 18 km south-southeast of the city of Besançon ( straight line ). The village is located in the Jura, on the northern edge of the plateau of Amancey that stretches between the valleys of Loue and Lison, on the Mont d' Ornans.

The area of ​​9:23 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The main part of the area is occupied by the plateau of Chassagne, the northernmost part of the high plateau of Amancey. There is an average of 550 meters and is part of meadow land, part of the forest ( Barmaud and Lavoutre ) passed. The plateau of Chassagne has a width of one to 2.5 km and rises to the south slightly, where 583 m is the highest point of Chassagne -Saint -Denis is achieved. On three sides the plateau drops steeply to the surrounding erosion valleys. To the west is the valley of the Ruisseau de Valbois, in the north of the valley of the Loue and east of the valley section of the Ruisseau de Borneille. The slopes are forested and are lined at the top almost continuously from a more or less distinctive Kalkfelswand. The municipality border is usually at the top of the escarpment. The plateau has no above-ground rivers, because the rainwater seeps into the karst underground.

Neighboring communities of Chassagne -Saint -Denis are Scey- Maisières in the north, Ornans in the east, Flagey to the south and Cléron in the West.

History

In the Middle Ages Chassagne belonged to the rule Scey. The Castel -Saint -Denis, which is located on the communal land is first mentioned in 1083. It was the seat of the Lords of Scey and later the Count Palatine of Burgundy. 1477 was the castle of troops of King Louis XI. destroyed. She was purchased and restored in 1550 by the family Granvelle. Of the Swedish army was under the Thirty Years' War in 1638 again affected. During the occupation of the Franche- Comté by the French crown from 1674, the castle was completely destroyed. Together with the Franche -Comté Chassagne came with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France. To avoid confusion with other municipalities of the same name, Chassagne in 1922 was officially renamed in Chassagne -Saint- Denis. Today Chassagne -Saint -Denis is a member of the comprehensive 24 villages municipal association Communauté de communes du Pays d' Ornans.

Attractions

The village church of Chassagne -Saint- Denis was built in the 18th century. In the old town numerous farmhouses are obtained in the characteristic style of the Haut-Doubs from the 18th to 19th centuries. On a narrow ledge between the valleys of the Loue and their side stream Ruisseau de Valbois are the ruins of the medieval castle Castel- Saint- Denis. A natural attraction is the 60 m high waterfall Cascade de Valbois.

Population

With 116 inhabitants (1 January 2011 ) Chassagne -Saint -Denis is one of the smallest municipalities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1881 197 persons were still counted ), a continuous population growth was recorded since the mid-1970s again.

Economy and infrastructure

Chassagne -Saint -Denis was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture ( crops, livestock ) and forestry embossed village.
