Montot, Haute-Saône

Montot is a commune in Haute -Saône in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Montot situated at an altitude of 230 m above sea level, 14 km north of Gray and about 48 km northwest of the city of Besançon (air line). The village is located in the west of the department, in the northwest of the plateau landscape Saônetals, in an elevated position on the southern edge of the valley of the salon.

The area of ​​10.03 km ² municipal area includes a portion in the region of the plateau north of the Saônetals. The northern part of the municipality is occupied by the Talniederung the salon with many turns it flows through about one kilometer wide Talniederung to the east. History

The territory of Montot was settled very early. It remains of a Roman thoroughfare and a Gallo-Roman settlement site were found. Montot is mentioned as Montez and Montoz. The place name derives from the Latin word mons (mountain ), meaning with the diminutive -ot as much as small mountain. In the Middle Ages Montot belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in the territory of the Bailliage d' amont. The noble family of Montot which is occupied since the 12th century, received the rule as a fief of the family Vergy. 1641 the village was looted and destroyed by the troops of the French king. Together with the Franche -Comté Montot came with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. Today Montot is a member of the 42 localities comprehensive community association Communauté de communes des Quatre Rivières.

Attractions

The single-nave church of Notre -Dame de l' Assomption in 1606 built on the site of an earlier chapel.
