Action

The voice impersonator and actor Daniel Hillard is thrown out by his wife Miranda, when he once again throws the job and the house turns at a birthday party for son Christopher in a desolate battlefield.

It comes to a court dispute over custody, which is ultimately awarded to Miranda.

Since he can not bear the thought to be able to see his three children only once a week under supervision, he can be by his brother, a trained artist, the perfect masquerade a sixty year old lady ( just Mrs. Doubtfire ) miss and is applying, coupled with his talent as a voice imitator, to a position as a nanny with his ex-wife.

This fall for the masquerade and so does the mischief its course: Daniel works for several months as a housekeeper and nanny dressed. One day, he is observed by his children, as he urinates standing. However, they promise to keep the secret for themselves, because they want to see their father. On a night of dizziness flies on when Daniel slipped the mask in a restaurant.

Miranda reacts shocked and now finally gets custody awarded.

Only when Daniel gets his own TV show by accident with the figure "Mrs Doubtfire " and can do his duties as a house husband, Miranda decides to offer him in spite of the dispute for the sake of children to exercise custody together.

Naming

The name " Doubtfire " is derived from the telephone conversation between Daniel and Miranda, in which he must come up with a name for his housekeepers alias within seconds. For advice, he looks around and his gaze wanders to a newspaper article, subtitled with the headline "Police doubtfire what accidental " (translated as: "Police doubts that fire accidentally broke out "). Thus, they would be called in German " woman doubt fire."

Differences from the novel

Differences to Anne Fine's presentation are clear. This can be seen already at the beginning: While it is shown in the film as it comes to divorce, the novel increases after the separation during a visit to the children at their father. Similarly, individual sub-plots as well as in many parts of the structure are different; so Lydie recognizes the novel already at the interview that her father is under the masquerade, which she tells her brother. The two older children are thus opened from the beginning and have for her father, who does not mutate like in the movie the " budget gem " for the most part do the housework, which ensures voltages. Overall, the novel is less comedic, but rather tragicomic applied in comparison to the film and Daniels describes cladding rather than inconvenient stopgap, which he received from despair. In the film, the comedic effect of the cladding is achieved primarily that Daniel clumsy self eindeckt as in the book of second-hand goods, but to " Makeover " professionally by his clichéd -gay brother and his significant other can. Also Daniel is an actor in the novel, while the film aware of the professional voice imitator was chosen because it more comedic potential was detected.
