The Nord Norge (Norwegian for Northern Norway) is a passenger and ro-ro ship of the Hurtigruten ASA and runs on the Hurtigruten along the coast of Norway in regular service. The ship is named after the country's northernmost part of Norway ( officially: Nord-Norge ) named. She is the fourth ship of the company that bears that name. The first " Nordnorge " has already been put into service in 1924.

History

Construction and commissioning

The Nordnorge was at the shipyard Kvaerner Ulsteinvik as ( Kleven Verft A / S) built in Ulsteinvik. The keel was laid on September 8, 1995. On 19 March 1997, the ship to the shipping company Ofotens above Vester Aalen Dampskibsselskap A / S ( OVDS ) was delivered. A day later, the baptism was performed by the Norwegian politician Sissel Marie Rønbeck.

Use

After a cruise through the North Sea, the Nordnorge took on 29 April 1997 the airline service on the route Bergen - Kirkenes.

Starting from November 2002 to April 2003 the Nordnorge was used in the subsequent years during the winter months in the northern hemisphere for expedition cruises in Antarctica. In autumn 2004 the Nordnorge covered the distance between Hammerfest (Norway) and Ushuaia ( Argentina) at 43 days back. Among other things, a number of European cities, the Canary Islands and Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires were started.

In the winter of 2008 / 09, the Nordnorge was launched and later chartered as a hotel ship at Aker Solutions due to massive financial problems of Hurtigruten ASA. In the summer of 2009 was a major overhaul at the shipyard in Bremerhaven Bredo. On 1 April 2010 it was reintegrated into service on the Norwegian coast.

Special events

  • The Nordnorge took on the night of February 1, 2007, the passengers of her sister ship " Nordkapp ", which was run on January 30 in front of Deception Iceland in Antarctica due.
  • On 23 November 2007 the Nordnorge was involved in the rescue of the passengers of the "Explorer" in the Antarctic.

Machinery and drive

The conventional propulsion system running the Nordnorge consists of two six-cylinder four -stroke diesel engines of Krupp 6M552C series, which act on the two KaMeWa controllable-pitch propellers via reduction gear type Lohmann NAVILUS GCK 755HP. Equipment

The Nordnorge is approved for a maximum of 691 passengers. It has 457 beds in 214 rooms, three of which are barrier-free. The cabin offer also includes 12 suites of varying sizes. On the boat, parking for 45 vehicles are available. Access to the vehicle deck is via a hydraulically operated ramp on the port side.

The Nordnorge is equipped with a restaurant and other dining facilities as well as Internet terminals. Above the bridge there is a glass observation lounge. In addition, the ship features a spa area with sauna and two outdoor hot tubs.
