The Splendour of the Seas (German splendor of the seas ) is the second cruise ship in the "Vision " class, a series of Panamax cruise ships that are operated by the U.S. shipping company Royal Caribbean International. The ship was designed for worldwide cruising and is one of the fastest cruise ships in the world. After the commissioning of the Splendour of the Seas was initially under the Norwegian flag in use before it was registered in the Bahamas in 2005. She is the sister ship of the "Legend of the Seas ".

History

Construction and commissioning

After the contract was signed on March 1, 1993, the keel of the ship with the hull number B31 was held at the shipyard Chantiers de l' Atlantique in Saint- Nazaire on September 4, 1994. After the flooding of the building dock on June 17, 1995, the ship was transferred to the fitting-out, completed and there could be delivered to the shipping company according to the classification by Det Norske Veritas on 15 March 1996. The baptism took place on 29 March 1996 by Lisa Wilhelmsen in Southampton. The construction costs were given as 325 million U.S. $.

Use

Immediately after the baptism of the Splendour of the Seas ran on March 31, 1996 for their first cruise, which ran from Southampton to Barcelona. Due to its overall design was for cruises, including regular transatlantic passages used in the following years worldwide.

In 2001 there was a major renovation. In November 2011, have been carried out extensive modernization work again in Cádiz under a stay in dry dock the Spanish shipyard Navantia. Here, 124 outside cabins have balconies and get the hull of the ship, a duck tail was attached. The 270 -ton duck tail is hollow inside, thus giving an extra boost, but also brings ballast on the lowest possible point of the ship. All cabins and bathrooms have been renovated and equipped with new furniture and technology. The Viking Crown Lounge has two specialty restaurants, the Izumi and Chops Grill, enriched. Machinery and drive

Energy supply

The Splendour of the Seas is equipped with a very powerful for this size of ship diesel-electric machinery. It consists of five V -12 -cylinder diesel engines, the Wärtsilä 46 series, which are characterized by low emissions and low-vibration operation. You drive generators of GEC Alstom to supply the entire ship with electrical energy. Waste heat from the diesel engine is used in the exhaust gas boiler for the production of process steam, which is used inter alia for the production of drinking water. For emergency power the ship is equipped with two diesel generators. In their drive motors are 12 - cylinder diesel engines of the Detroit Diesel 12V92TA. To ensure a high stability on the open sea, the machinery in the center of the hull is arranged.

Driving and maneuvering

The drive of the Splendour of the Seas is done with two fixed pitch propellers, the three-phase synchronous motors (manufactured by Alstom Marine ) are driven by shafting. The high drive power of about 20 MW per engine allows for propeller speeds of up to 145/min speeds over 25 knots, but noticeable vibration. At lower speeds, the ship is considered very quiet running. To support the conventional rudder system at low speeds and when maneuvering, the Splendour of the Seas has two Brunvoll - transverse thrusters in the bow and one at the rear.

Cabins and onboard facilities

The Splendour of the Seas offers a total of 902 cabins accommodate a maximum of 2,064 passengers. Of the 575 outside cabins are 232 equipped with a balcony. 388 cabins have three or four beds. 17 cabins are accessible for disabled people. Since the ship is also designed for longer cruises, the cabins were enlarged compared with the older ships of the shipping company. The interior of the vessel was designed by the Norwegian architect Njal R. Eide. Special features are the floor to ceiling windows, glass domes and skylights with a total area of ​​over 8,000 m².
