The Brilliance of the Seas is a cruise ship of Royal Caribbean International. She has three sister ships: the Radiance of the Seas, Serenade of the Seas and Jewel of the Seas.

History

The keel laying of the Brilliance of the Seas took place on 25 June 1998 at the Jos. L. Meyer GmbH shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. On 1 December 2001, the covered building dock was flooded, the ship floated for the first time on. The Ausdockung takes place a few months later on 31 May 2002, shortly after the last work began on the outfitting pier. The construction of the ship cost 350 million U.S. dollars.

On 11 and 12 June 2002, the Emsüberführung of the shipyard was carried out in Papenburg to Eemshaven. After some tests in the North Sea took place, in which, inter alia, the maximum speed was determined. The handover to Royal Caribbean International took place in Eemshaven on 5 July 2002. From there, the first journey via Amsterdam started to Harwich, England.

Marilyn Ofer, member of the Presidency of the Holocaust Educational Trust, was godmother at the christening of the ship, which was carried out on 12 July 2002. On 15 July 2002 launched the seven-day maiden voyage from Harwich by the Norwegian fjords. Following is a series of four different cruises from Harwich to the British Isles, the Norwegian fjords, performed to Scandinavia and Russia.

From 27 April to 15 May 2008, the gas turbine, the Brilliance of the Seas at Blohm Voss in Hamburg, was subjected to extensive maintenance. For this purpose, it was in the dock Elbe 17 - as in 2007 her sister ship, the Jewel of the Seas - towed.

Areas of application

The ship was first used in 2002 in Northern Europe, 2003-2011 then in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. 2010, it was first used in the winter season for cruises in the Persian Gulf from Dubai. Her current areas of application are the Baltic Sea as well as Norway and Iceland in the summer, Canada & New England in the fall and winter in the Caribbean.

Drive

With the Brilliance of the Seas two novel, 360 ° rotatable propeller gondolas from ABB are used. In each of these gondolas an electric motor is with a capacity of 19.5 MW. In the bow of the ship there are further three bow thrusters. These give the ship a high maneuverability for berthing and departure maneuvers. The electricity is powered by two General Electric LM2500 gas turbines of the type produced ( per 20,000 kW), which are based on the CF6 -6, as well as a Fincantieri steam turbine ( 16,323 kW).

In-flight entertainment

Typical board conversations on the ships of Royal Caribbean International include climbing walls, a jogging track, a basketball and a volleyball court, golf simulators, a 9 -hole mini - golf course and a large number of fitness equipment - all overlooking the sea. In addition, there is on board a number of self-leveling pool tables.

Incidents

On 15 October 2009 heavy squalls in the Mediterranean destroyed several large windows of the ship and caused great havoc in 26 departments. This had the consequence that the subsequent cruise from Barcelona could only start late.

On December 12, 2010 Brilliance of the Seas came on the trip to Alexandria off the Egyptian coast in heavy seas. Large parts of the interior were damaged, so that three major public sector for the rest of the cruise had to be closed. Partial additionally fell off the electricity - but this was not of significant control or navigation equipment on the ship.

In July 2005, George Allen Smith disappeared during his honeymoon on the " Brilliance of the Seas" without a trace. Later, it was blood to a part of the ship below the balcony cabins. After a search turned out that George Allen Smith seems to have fallen overboard. Later, the members were given a severance payment of approximately one million U.S. dollars.
