Mundaka

Mundaka (Spanish Mundaca ) is a very old place in the Spanish Basque Country ( province of Biscay ). The time of founding is unknown. Off the coast lies the uninhabited island of Izaro.

Billabong Pro Mundaka Surf Contest

Mundaka is particularly famous with surfers, the annual meet here in October for the Billabong Pro Mundaka to surf one of the best waves in Europe. The wave breaks left on a sandbar and is known for its tubes.

After the shipyard Murueta SA in 2003 had changed the mouth of the river Oka by dredging to allow better access to their yard, the wave of the Billabong Pro Mundaka slowly disappeared until 2005 had to be canceled. In 2006, the wave returned. The shipyard was given strict conditions.
