Mute Records

Mute Records is a British record label and was founded in 1978 by Daniel Miller in London. Today it belongs to Bertelsmann's BMG Rights Management. Mute Records licensed the brand to Mute Mute Artists, an independent label that focuses on the production and distribution of electronic embossed pop music and was re-established by Miller 2010.

History

The founding dates back to the Daniel Miller's decision, his own musical work with the burgeoning genre of electronic instruments ( synthesizers) to market in the self distribution. The produced single Warm Leatherette by The Normal became a club hit and is still part of the repertoire of DJs, who specializes in electronic and New Wave music of the early 1980s. Miller outed himself as a fan of very early German Krautrock and early electronic avant-garde such as Kraftwerk, Neu! , Can or New Yorkers Suicide. The first release of the label was, consequently, the second album by the German electronic provocateurs German American Friendship ( DAF), The little ones and the bad of 1980, a milestone of German electro punks and pioneers of Electronic Body Music.

Among the artists who took Mute under contract, later also belonged commercially extremely successful bands such as Depeche Mode, Erasure, Moby, Nick Cave, Einstürzende Neubauten, Kraftwerk, Laibach or Goldfrapp.

Mute today has two offices: in England and the United States. The offices in the former Czechoslovakia ( "Mute Czechoslovakia" ) and in Germany ( "Mute sound recordings " ) no longer exist as separate departments. The German division was closed in 2008 by the then parent EMI Music.

In May 2002, Daniel Miller Mute Records sold to the British major label EMI Music, which Mute lost its independent status. In September 2010, Miller and EMI agreed to the re-establishment of an independent label under Miller's leadership and brand Mute Artists Ltd. The brand mute as well as the rights to recordings and the contracts with artists such as Depeche Mode, Goldfrapp and power plant remained with Mute Records / EMI. Mute Records license since then the brand and recordings that were published to date with the mute, the Mute Artists new.

Following the acquisition of EMI Music through Universal Music in 2012, this Mute Records had resell due to requirements of the European Commission. In the course of the bidding contest Daniel Miller tried to buy back his former record company, but lost the Berlin BMG Rights Management.

The catalog of Mute Records BMG licensed in the U.S. and Canada to INgrooves and the rest of the world PIAS except the Depeche Mode catalog, which is distributed worldwide by Sony Music Entertainment.

Alignment of Mute

In addition to the main label Mute still exist some sub- labels, which have mostly used a particular style of music. For very experimental music, there is Blast First, for more danceable techno / electronica novamute the sub-label, which perfectly respectable successes celebrated ( especially among DJs), and still can. The artist roster (s) include, for example, Luke Slater, Plastikman, Juno Reactor, or Steve Stoll. Initially has novamute quite often the Tresor Records plates licensed for the international market and so provided a broad mass available.

But there are not only the Techno label in the house Mute, but another that illuminates other electronic pages of today's music scene - house and trance. This style was released on sublabel Future Groove and had also well-known names such as Jamez, the Trancesetters (a project of Jamez and Dobre ), Desert and others under contract.
