Nad Tatrou sa blýska

Nad Tatrou sa blýska is the national anthem of Slovakia.

The song was created in 1844 during a Protestzugs by students of the Evangelical Theological Lyceum of Bratislava ( Pressburg ) to Levoča ( Leutschau ). The students demonstrated against the dismissal of their teacher, Ľudovít Štúr by the Hungarian government.

The Verstext comes from Janko Matuska and was 1844. The melody is that of the old folk song Kopala studienku ( She dug a little brook ).

1920, the first verse of the song was part of the Czechoslovak anthem after Kde domov můj, the Czech anthem was sung, the Slovak without a break. 1993 from the first two stanzas of Nad Tatrou sa blýska the anthem of the independent Slovakia.
