Neshkan

Neschkan (Russian Нешкан ) is a village ( selo ) in the Autonomous District of the Chukchi (Russia) with 704 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The village is located about 500 km as the crow northeast of the county government center Anadyr on the Chukchi Peninsula on the coast of the Chukchi Sea, a marginal sea of the Arctic Ocean, on a spit separating the lagoon from the open sea Neskenpilgyn.

Neschkan is part of Rajon Tschukotski and is located about 180 km north- west of the administrative center Lawrentija. It is the only town in the same rural community ( selskoje posselenije ). Almost 95 % of the inhabitants are members of indigenous peoples of the Russian North, mainly Chukchi and Yupik some.

History

The village was founded in the 1950s as part of the efforts of the Soviet period, to concentrate the indigenous population of the area in a few larger settlements. The of the Eskimo languages ​​( Yupik ) derived place name refers to a nearby, 82 meters, at the western end of the spit and means Robben head.

Traffic

Neschkan is not connected to the road network. It can be otherwise achieved in the ice-free period on the sea by helicopter from the Rajonzentrum Lawrentija.
