Kanchalan

Kantschalan (Russian Канчалан ) is a village ( selo ) in the Autonomous District of the Chukchi (Russia) with 629 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The place is located in the tundra on the right bank of the eponymous river Kantschalan, the left ends opposite the city Anadyr in the estuary of the River Anadyr. Just above Kantschalan unite the two major river arms of the Kantschalan, the north form a 30 km long and up to 15 km wide island: the left Nowy Kamtschalan ( " New Kantschalan " ) and the right Stary Kamtschalan ( "Age Kantschalan ").

Kantschalan is part of Rajon Anadyrski and is located approximately 60 km north- west of the county and Rajonverwaltungszentrums Anadyr. It is the only town in the same rural community ( selskoje posselenije ).

History

The village was founded in 1952 in the context of becoming settled the semi-nomadic reindeer herding mainly operated Chukch indigenous population, which today represents about 80 % of the inhabitants of the place. In the years to 2005, the entire fabric of the place was virtually replaced.

Traffic

Kantschalan has no permanent road access. It is in the ice-free period by boat or helicopter to reach in winter a ice road on the Kantschalan of Anadyr.
