Nevelsk

Newelsk (Russian Невельск ) is a town in Sakhalin Oblast (Russia) with 11,682 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located on the west coast of Sakhalin Island, about 130 km southwest of the Oblasthauptstadt Yuzhno -Sakhalinsk, on the river Nevelskoi Bay of the Sea of ​​Japan.

The city is the Newelsk Oblast administratively subordinated directly and as the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

History

The first Russian settlers reached the area that is now Newelsk 1789. Between the signing of the Treaty of Shimoda in 1855 and the exchange of the northern, so-called 18 Kuril Islands after the Treaty of Saint Petersburg against the southern part of Sakhalin Island there was a settlement under the name Honto under joint Russo- Japanese administration. Thereafter, only Russian administration, the location of 1905 belonged to 1945 after the Treaty of Portsmouth, which ended the Russo- Japanese War from 1904 to 1905, back to Japan. Between 1916 and 1927 this was the first ice-free even in winter harbor of the island. 1912 opened 20 km south, the river Assanai, the first fish processing factory.

Belonging in the result of the Second World War from 1945 to the Soviet Union, the place was christened on June 5, 1946 under the present name (after the admiral and explorer Gennady Nevelskoi ) city charter.

On 2 August 2007, the city was rocked by an earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, which lasted from several days aftershocks and a small tsunami was accompanied. In the quake, there were two deaths and twelve seriously injured, also over 3000 homeless.

Culture, Education and sights

In Newelsk there is a nautical school and a Historical and Folk Museum.

In its vicinity there is a colony of Steller sea lions shear ( Eumetopias jubatus ), which is also reflected in the coat of arms.

Economy

Newelsk is one of the centers of the fishing industry of the island of Sakhalin and base of operations of the trawler fleet. Nearby coal is conveyed to a small extent.

Protected by the warm ocean current along the west coast of the island and from the east by steep mountains, the city in the mildest climate in the area of the island ( " Crimea from Sakhalin " ) and is therefore also the center of an agricultural region (potatoes, vegetables, fruits, dairy farming ).

There are efforts to make the city attractive for tourism (Marine Animal watching, diving, yachting ).
