The Newport Harbor High School is a public high school in Newport Beach, Orange County in the U.S. state of California. It is part of the Newport - Mesa Unified School District. It was attended by 2483 students in the school year 2009/10.

History

After the First World War there were in the harbor area around Huntington Beach, Costa Mesa, Newport Beach and Laguna Beach not very many students of the appropriate age to attend a high school can. They were distributed to the high schools in Huntington Beach and Santa Ana. After five years of effort, the approval was granted in 1929, a new high school at the border in Costa Mesa erect.

In the first year the school was attended by 207 students who were taught by 12 teachers. The original construction of the school consisted of the main building, a tower, a woodworking shop and a hut that served as a caretaker's apartment. The high tower was built in his time, so that people could be made ​​aware of the new school in the region. Beginning of the 1940s a new building was built for the teaching of mathematics, the Dodge Hall was baptized. It was named after Donald Dodge, who saw to it that the newly formed school district is separated from the Santa Ana. In 1948, a gymnasium was built on the school grounds. In the same year, eight barracks of the U.S. Army were converted into classrooms. As the number of students increased, in 1949 another sports hall was built, which was used by the female students. In addition, an open swimming pool was applied to the Irvine Avenue. 1955 another building was built, which was used for art lessons. Due to the proximity to the harbor is the school mascot Tommy Tar, an individualized representation of Popeye the Sailor.

In the years 2005 and 2006, the Newport - Mesa Unified School District earned by pension funds 282 million USD, of which $ 36 million was invested in the Newport Harbor High School to expand the school building to a 6,500 m2 large wings.
