History
Founding and first EP
The namesake of the band is the bassist Jason Newsted, the mid-1980s with the band Flotsam and Jetsam made a name for himself and was from 1986 to 2001 member of Metallica. After Newsted end of 2011 musical reappeared on the occasion of the 30-year anniversary of Metallica band after several years break Newsted decided themselves to start a new band. The other founding members were guitarist and drummer Jessie Farnsworth Jesus Mendez Jr. Both musicians Newsted previously completed numerous jam sessions.
In an interview with the German magazine Rock Hard Newsted said that he named his new band after himself because of the lengthy court proceedings to his former band Echo Brain. Echo Brain were sued by the Texas band echo drain for alleged copyright infringement. While Jason Newsted and Echo Brain won the process, but it had a cost of about half a million dollars wearing. In retrospect, Echo Echo Brain drain had " destroyed ".
For $ 2,000, the musicians hired to the studio of a friend and took within one week five songs. Among them was the song " Soldier Head ", which was a short time later played on various radio stations. The band was then taken by Epic Records. On January 8, 2013 Newsted published on iTunes their debut EP Metal and shot for the song "Soldier Head " a music video. The EP was sold in the first week after the release of about 6,200 copies in the U.S. and was ranked 62 of the U.S. album charts.
Heavy Metal Music
In March 2013, the Staind guitarist Mike Mushok joined the band. the their debut album Heavy Metal Music recorded the following month. Jason Newsted had originally planned the release of three EPs in short intervals, but this was rejected by the record label. On April 19, 2013, the band played their first concert in Walnut Creek. It was followed by numerous festivals such as Rock am Ring, With Full Force or the Graspop Metal Meeting in Europe. In summer 2013, the band played as part of the band Megadeth Gigantour in North America. Concerts in Canada had to cancel Newsted, since Jason Newsted was diagnosed with an atypical pneumonia.
The release of their debut album Heavy Metal Music took place on August 2, 2013. The album reached # 17 in the German and number 15 in the Swiss album charts. About 8,000 copies were sold in the U.S. in the first week and the album reached # 40 on the album charts. For the song " King of the Underdogs " a music video was filmed. In February 2014 Newsted will take part in the Soundwave Festival in Australia.
Style
Newsted play heavy metal, which is usually held in mid-tempo and bass-heavy sounds. The Complete Music and lyrics are written by Jason Newsted. Matthias Mineur by the German magazine Metal Hammer describes Newsted as a hybrid of those bands that which Newsted came to fame and honor and named Metallica, Flotsam and Jetsam, Ozzy Osbourne, Voivod and Zakk Wylde as influences.
