Nick Bourne

Nicholas Henry Bourne, Bourne Baron of Aberystwyth ( born January 1, 1952 in Newark) is a Welsh politician of the Conservative Party. He was chairman of the Welsh Conservatives and member of the National Assembly for Wales. In September 2013 he was appointed Life Peer.

Education and career

Bourne attended King Edward VI School in Chelmsford and graduated from Aberystwyth University in Wales and at Trinity College, Cambridge. He is a member of the Law Society of Gray's Inn.

Bourne taught law at various institutions, including St Catherine 's College, South Bank University, Swansea Law School, where he was also Dean, and others. He wrote several books on legal topics.

Political career

In the British general election in 1983 Bourne was Conservative candidate for the constituency of Chesterfield, and also in the by-election the following year. In 1997 he moved again to the British general election, this time for the constituency of Worcester.

Bourne entered against the establishment of a Welsh Assembly Parliament and led the unsuccessful 1997 campaign "Just Say No". In the first election of the new National Assembly for Wales 1999, he was elected as representative of the Mid and West Wales region. The seat in the National Assembly he held until 2011.

From 1999 to 2011 Bourne was party leader of the Welsh Conservatives. From 2007 to 2011 he was the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly for Wales.

On September 9, 2013 Bourne was appointed Life Peer and thus has a seat in the House of Lords. He took the title of Baron of Bourne Aberystwyth.

Scandals

In September 2008, the Welsh Conservatives published a document in which the First Minister for Wales, Rhodri Morgan, was attacked personally. First, Bourne distanced itself from the document that was published without his knowledge. Later, he had to admit that he himself had approved the document for publication.

A little later, Bourne was attacked from their own ranks. His leadership qualities were called into question, sought a change of leadership. Previously Bourne's expense reports were made ​​public, containing an iPod and costly bathroom renovations, among other things.
