Norrmalm (proper)

Norrmalm is one of the central Stockholm city districts. The population is about 61,000 people.

Norrmalm

Norrmalm is today considered the business center of Stockholm and is also referred to as the " Stockholm City".

In the 17th century, when Stockholm grew rapidly, Norrmalm was incorporated, and the city palaces and town houses were built. After 1871, the Central Railway Station was opened to Norrmalm became the new city center with banks, shops and entertainment venues.

As part of the renovation of Norrmalm ( Norrmalmsregleringen ) most of the old houses was demolished in 1952, and a modern shopping and administrative district was established, in which the largest department stores, cultural institutions and the government are firm. The number of inhabitants is therefore quite low at about 7,000. In the district there are two metro stations: T- centralen and Hötorget.

Interesting buildings and streets in the district of Norrmalm are the Kulturhuset, the Konserthuset, the National Museum and the Sergels torg, the Kungsträdgården and Hamngatan.

Vasastaden

The district got its name from the street Vasagatan which feeds directly to him. The street is named for a statue of Gustav Vasa, who was standing at the top front of the Noblemen. In the mid-19th century, there was a village here and several noble estates. With the urban development was started in 1880.

The district Vasastaden was formed in 1926, the land area covers 294 hectares, in 2004 51 801 people lived here. In the north of Lake Vasastaden Brunnsviken is bounded to the east by the Birger Jarlsgatan, in the south of the Tegnergatan and to the west by Lake Karlbergssjön the Karlberg Castle is situated on the banks of which, however, already in the municipality of Solna.

The dominant streets are Sveavägen, which runs from north to south and is crossed by the Odengatan. Here is the Stockholm City Library by architect Gunnar Asplund. Another main road train is the S: t Eriksgatan that leads to the south over the Karlbergssjön in the Kungsholmen district. In the heart Vasastadens are the place Odenplan with the Church Gustav Vasa kyrka and the Park Vasaparken. In the district there are three metro stations: Odenplan, Rådmansgatan and St. Erik plan.

Vasastadens big " landmark" was Astrid Lindgren, who lived for 60 years in the Dalagatan overlooking the Vasaparken. So far, Stockholm has not yet managed to honor its famous citizen by a road or park name. There are ideas, part of the Vasaparken in " Astrid Lindgren's Park " rename.

Skeppsholmen

The district consists of the same island and the island Kastellholmen. It is connected by bridge to the district Norrmalm. Skeppsholmen in 1634 naval base. Kastellholmen

Kastellholmen is the southern neighbor island of Skeppsholmen and is connected to it by a bridge, the area is about 3.1 acres. On the island there are some residential and storage buildings and the castle of the architect Fredrik Blom of 1848, which had replaced an earlier, burned- fort. The island was called, among other things Notholmen and Skansholmen, since 1720 it bears the name Kastellholmen. Because of their strategic location in the inlet to Stockholm here the Swedish Navy was stationed since 1665.
