Okay Temiz

Okay Temiz ( born February 11, 1939 in Istanbul) is a Turkish ethno - jazz drummer, percussionist, bandleader and composer who founded the Oriental Wind formations and the Okay Temiz Magnetic tape.

Life and work

Okay Temiz had lessons as a child with his mother and later studied percussion in Ankara. 1955, at the beginning of his professional career, he played in dance groups; he developed already during his studies at the Tophane Art Institute 's own percussion instruments. In 1967 he came with the Ulvi - Temel Orchestra to Stockholm. There he met Don Cherry, amplifies busy at this time with global music ideas and became aware of the Turkish drummer. Cherry was working with the South African bassist Johnny Dyani on the Crossbreeding South African folk music and its rhythms in jazz. 1969 Cherry Okay Temiz committed to a festival appearance and took with him the album Live Ankara as well as in Paris in 1972 on the album Orient. There was a long-standing collaboration between the two musicians; yet in 1993 he was involved in the Don Cherry album Dona Nostra.

Since then Temiz worked in parallel in Turkey and - from his adopted home of Sweden - in Western Europe and worked with musicians such as Chris McGregor, Harry Miller, Palle Danielsson, Christian Burchard and Charlie Mariano. In the early 1970s he played in Maffy Falays Turkish- Swedish formation Sevda, had a trio with Mongezi Feza and Johnny Dyani and in 1972 and 1974 respectively participated in the sessions of the New Jazz Meeting Baden -Baden ( Südwestfunk ).

Although in 1975 he formed with Lennart Aberg the formation Oriental Wind .. The starting point was always the jazz; But temiz tied in a jazz unusual meters Turkish, Arabic or Balkan origin in its ethno-jazz. His current lineup Okay Temiz Magnetic tape (since 1995) continues this direction and develops them further. In 1984, he performed with the Percussion Summit on the Donaueschingen Music Days. In 1985 he took part in India at the international percussion festival Valley Vadhya Utsav, which was organiziert by the Indian state, along with Atilla Engin and Burhan Öçal.

Temiz returning in 1998 to Istanbul, where he founded his Rhythm Workshop with which he propagated music not only as a musical project, but also as a healing force for the participants.

Prizes and awards

2011 Temiz the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Istanbul International Jazz Festival received.
