Õngu a village (Estonian küla ) in the rural community is Emmaste ( Emmaste vald ). It is the second largest Estonian island of Hiiumaa ( German Dagö ), directly on the Baltic coast.

Description and History

Õngu ( German Onega ) now has 30 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011). It is 24 kilometers southwest of the island's capital Kärdla ( Kertel ).

Through the town flows the river Õngu ( Õngu Jõgi ). It rises in the moorland in the center of the island of Hiiumaa.

A water mill is mentioned for the place since 1563. 1583 was the village Ennige. 1798 are listed under the name Öngo village and mill.

Economy

In Õngu is now home to the fish farm OÜ Õngu Noorkalakasvandus. The company specializes in breeding of sea trout.
