Orientale Province

Orientale (French " East ", "east " ) is a province of the Democratic Republic of Congo capital Kisangani.

Geography

The province is located in the northeast of the country and bordered to the northwest by the Central African Republic, on the northeast by South Sudan, on the south by the provinces of Kasai - Oriental, Maniema and North Kivu, on the west by the province of Equateur and on the east by Uganda.

History

The province was created already during the Belgian colonial period. From 1933 to 1947, she was named after its capital Stanleyville (French ) or Stanleystad ( hook size ) (now Kisangani ). 1962 Orientale was dissolved and in the provinces of Haut- Congo (Upper Congo ), Kibali - Ituri and Uele divided. Four years later (1966 ) restored the province. In 1971, the province of Haut- Zaire ( Oberzaire ) has been renamed. With the end of the reign of Mobutu Sese Seko in 1997, the province such as the Republic of Zaire was also renamed. First, change in skin -Congo and even within the same year, it received its present name.

Planned, never implemented resolution

With the adoption of a new constitution in May 2005, the Congo should be regrouped and Orientale be divided into four new provinces, which largely meet the current districts Orientales:

  • Bas- Uele Buta with its capital
  • Haut- Uele with capital Isiro
  • Ituri with the capital Bunia
  • Tshopo with capital Kisangani

After the appointment of the management change was previously postponed several times, President Joseph Kabila made ​​this completely reversed in January 2011. This Orientale will continue to exist in its current form.
