Ormož

Ormož ( German: Friedau ) is a small town of 2298 inhabitants in the northeast of Slovenia. Ormož is the historical region of Lower Styria ( Lower Styria ), near the town of Ptuj. It is the capital of the homonymous municipality ( 17,095 inhabitants). Ormož is located on the left bank of the Drava River, which forms the border between Slovenia and Croatia here.

History

In ancient times the city was called Curta. It is mentioned in the Antonine Itinerary and of Ptolemy.

In the High Middle Ages, the city in the Holy Roman Empire under the name Holermuos was known, from which the present name Ormož developed. The city received in 1293 the market and in 1331 the municipal law, and then was called for a long time to German Friedau. With the establishment of the SHS state after the First World War, the city finally got its current name.

Separated from the city by a wall which was built as a fortress located on the border of the former Kingdom of Hungary by Friedrich von Ptuj Castle Ormož, which is first mentioned in 1278. In 1487, the city against an invasion of Hungary had to say in 1532 left behind the advancing Ottomans destruction, further insurgent Hungarian peasants, footmen, ( 1605), and the kuruc (1704).
