Peshkopia ( Albanian: Peshkopi ) is a small town in eastern Albania. Peshkopia currently has, according to the local government recorded about 18,750 inhabitants ( 2011), at the 2011 census, however, only 13,227 inhabitants. As the largest city of the region Peshkopia is also the capital of the district of Dibra and the Qarks Dibra. The city is located in a wide valley in the mountains, the so-called Dibra, on Peshkopi Brook, a tributary of the Black Drin, at 650 meters above the sea. Until the Macedonian border is approximately 20 kilometers.

Cityscape

As the administrative center Ostalbaniens Peshkopia has grown from a small village to the city quickly. By day, the city is filled with people who do their errands in the city shops or offices or sell at the market vegetables and fruit. There is a small boulevard with trees on both sides. Left and right of this the pedestrianized street, there are administrative buildings, cultural center and former Albturist hotel. On the hillside above the road that leads down to the river, the Treg -called district lies with the market and many older homes. The valley section of the river divides the city into two parts: South of the river deposited on top of a hill from the center of the district is Dobrova with numerous prefabricated buildings.

Attractions

The museum, in addition to the Ottoman houses, a large new mosque, the lovely landscape and reasonably nearby national parks the only attraction for tourists, is closed for a long time.

The sulfur spa Llixhat, a few kilometers east of the city center, while also attracts visitors from more distant areas. The treatments usually last several weeks. But it is possible also individual baths by day visitors.

History

Already the Romans were known to the warm, sulphurous springs. The name is derived from the Greek Peshkopia Episcopi ( Bishop 's seat), suggestive of an early Christianization. In the Ottoman period Peshkopia was a small market town, always in the shadow of the city Dibra, which is now across the border in Macedonia.
