Phil Moore (jazz musician)

Phil Moore ( born February 20, 1918 in Portland ( Oregon), † May 13, 1987 in Los Angeles ) was an American jazz pianist, composer, arranger and orchestral conductor.

Life and work

Phil Moore worked from the late 1930s with his own ensembles and was known by his band in the 1940s, which also Irving Ashby, Wallace Bishop, Britt Woodman, Johnny Letman, Murray McEachern, Gene Sedric, Remo Palmieri, Freddie Slack and Calvin Jackson played. In 1945, his Phil Moore Four, the backing band for Lena Horne ( " How Long Has That Train Been Gone "). Phil Moore also worked as an arranger, who is also an ambitious composition for the Slack Band wrote that " Fugue for Piano Barroom ( and Symphony Orchestra ) ", although listed in Los Angeles, but was never recorded.

With its enlarged orchestra in which, inter alia, Gerald Wilson, Snooky Young, Marshall Royal, Lucky Thompson, Red Callender, Artie Shapiro and Lee Young played, he took in 1947 for his discovery of Concerto For Piano And Orchestra. 1947 also emerged some 78's for Black & White ( " Is not Misbehavin ' ," " Mood Indigo "). 1949 accompanied his band, the singer Mary Ann McCall ( "I'm Yours " / " Nice Work ").

In 1958 Moore and his orchestra, played in the Buck Clayton, Vic Dickenson, Paul Quinichette, Sahib Shihab, Nat Pierce, Danny Barker and Wendell Marshall, an album on Atlantic with the singer LaVern Baker, LaVern Baker Sings Bessie Smith. In this year he also served as arranger and leader of a band that played in the Yank Lawson, Lou McGarity, Eddie Barefield and Milt Hinton, worked for the pianist and singer Bobby Short.

In 1981, he oversaw the television series Ad Lib, in which, among other things Musikerportaits were shown by Kenny Burrell, Jimmy Smith, Freddie Hubbard and Jimmy Witherspoon.
