Philip de Montmorency, Count of Horn

Philippe II de Montmorency -Nivelle, Count of Hoorn, Baron d' Altena, (* 1518-1526; † June 5, 1568 in Brussels) was a Dutch admiral and freedom fighter from the family of Montmorency. He was a knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece.

Philippe was the son of Joseph de Montmorency, Seigneur de Nivelle († 1530) and Anna of Egmond. After his father's death the mother married Count Johann II of Hoorn, who adopted the children. They wore from then on his name. Philip's brother Floris van Hoorn (not from Hoorn (North Holland), but from the county of Hoorn in Weert in Limburg), Baron de Montigny, Seigneur de Leuze ( 1528-1567 ) who was executed in Spain. Anna of Egmond, the same niece of his mother, was the wife of William the Silent of Orange- Nassau ( 1533-1584 ).

Philippe was a member of the State Council during the reign of Margaret of Parma. In 1546 he married Anna Walburga von Neuenahr ( 1522-1600 ). In 1562 he united with Lamoraal Count Egmond and William had brought the Schweiger noble opposition to Cardinal Granvelle ( 1517-1586 ), the Spanish troops and the Spanish Inquisition in the Netherlands. Resigned as an Even Granvelle, did not listen to the three to fight against Spanish tyranny in the Netherlands.

When the Duke of Alba in 1567 Margaret of Parma replaced as governor, he had the Counts of Egmond and Horn as leader of the opposition arrested and beheaded. This event caused great public outcry and was the beginning of open revolt against the Spaniards.
