Poľana Protected Landscape Area

The protected landscape area Polana (Slovak Chranena krajinná oblasť Polana ) is a nature reserve right in the heart of Slovakia. It includes both the eponymous mountain Polana and a part of the Veporské Hills and lies entirely in the political district Banskobystrický kraj ( Banská Bystrica Okresy, Brezno, Detva and Zvolen ). Since 1990, here the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Polana is set up.

The seat of government is located in Zvolen.

Geography

The PLA Polana is located in the center of Slovakia; on the mountain Hrb ( 1255 m nm) is located on the northern boundary of the geographic center of Slovakia. The majority of the area is the Polana Mountains, part of the Slovak Central Mountains. It is an extinct volcanic mountains, the heart of which the tertiary stratovolcano Polana is. The central part is formed by a caldera, a depression almost exactly circular, the cross section is about seven kilometers (for comparison, the cross section of the whole volcano is about 18 km). By one side of the Caldera breaks the stream Hučava and collects more streams from the environment to lead in Zvolen in the Slatina. In the past when the caldera ridge lie the six highest peaks of the mountain range, including the Polana ( 1458 m nm). The eastern part of the PLA is to say Veporské Hills. In contrast to the Polana he is part of the Slovak Ore Mountains. The whole area is also characterized by bizarre rock formations.

The whole area belongs to the catchment area of the Hron.

Flora and Fauna

In the field of PLA outweigh the woods. In some places the view from the mountain meadows opened, the local Poľany (singular Polana ) are called, who gave his name to the mountain. In addition to economic forests in some places you can still find virgin forests, for example, in the nature reserve Zadná Polana. Here grow fir, beech and mountain ash. Here the thermophilic mixed with a mountain flora. From the protected plant species can be found, the Hungarian Soldanelle, globe flower, Tannenbärlapp, Crown Campion, round-leaved sundew and the Siberian iris, and also plants from the family of orchids.

From the birds you can find here spotted eagle, eagle owl, Sperlingskäuze, white-backed woodpeckers, thrushes ring and black storks. In the woods constantly living brown bears, wolves and lynxes.
