Prom at the Palace

Prom at the Palace was a classical concert on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee ( Golden Jubilee) of Queen Elizabeth II took place on 1 June 2002. Venue was the garden of Buckingham Palace in London. The concert marked the opening of the Golden Jubilee Weekend, the main celebrations of the anniversary. The name recalls the summer concert series, The Proms at the Royal Albert Hall.

The two-hour concert was held in the presence of the royal family instead of in front of 12,000 spectators, who were drawn from among two million enthusiasts. Another 40,000 spectators watched the concert on The Mall on large screens, in addition, it has been broadcast in over 40 countries on television. It was the first event of its kind, which was held in the grounds of Buckingham Palace. The recording of the concert was later released on CD, the television images on DVD.

Under the direction of conductor Andrew Davis BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestra of the Royal Marines, accompanied by the BBC Symphony Chorus played. Among the guest vocalists included Roberto Alagna, Thomas Allen, Angela Gheorghiu and Kiri Te Kanawa. As a cello soloist Mstislav Rostropovich occurred while Roberto Bolle showed a choreographed by Anthony Dowell dance performance. They played works by Giuseppe Verdi, Giacomo Puccini, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Gioacchino Rossini, Tchaikovsky, George Gershwin, Georges Bizet, Edward Elgar and George Frideric Handel.

Two days later, on June 3, also the Party at the Palace was held at the same place, a pop and rock concert. On the occasion of diamentenen Jubilee ten years later there were on the square in front of Buckingham Palace again a concert, the Diamond Jubilee Concert.
