In the past they had tried to step out of the shadow of her famous father and himself studied mathematics at Northwestern University in Evanston. When her father fell ill, she gave up her studies and took care of him.

The discussion takes a surprising turn as it becomes clear that Robert died a few days earlier and Catherine entertainment only imagines. Again, to clear consciousness she comes by Hal, the graduate students of her father. He has in the office of the deceased 103 notebooks that Robert has filled in recent years due to a typographical compulsion with mostly meaningless formulas, discovered and is now hoping to find still in some geniuses of his former mentor. However, Catherine wants to prevent too much Hal deals with the written word, because she believes Hal would publish what was found under his own name in order to profit from them. She finds in neck jacket one of the notebooks and sees himself confirmed their theory. Hal tries her but make it clear that in the book nothing useful stand, but that her father is Catherine his thanks for their selfless care expressions and Hal wanted to give her this book, as she celebrates her 27th birthday on that very day.

The next morning - the day of the funeral - meets Catherine's sister Claire from New York, who immediately tried to take over the command of Catherine's life. It also plans, the late father, lying on the campus of the University and in the Catherine still lives the house to sell and take their confused younger sister with him to New York.

At the funeral, Catherine makes a scandal by going unasked to the microphone and all appeared people ask where they were actually been in recent years that it went so bad Robert. Embittered that she had him alone to take care of her entrutscht finally " Fortunately, he 's dead," she regretted shortly after.

On the same evening, Hal and Catherine come closer. After a night together, she hands him a key to a desk drawer, where he encounters a second notebook. This includes records of a spectacular mathematical proof, which could enable the scholarly world in amazement. Hal and Claire are surprised and doubt that Robert actually should have still been able to have written this evidence. Finally, Catherine interjects that not her father, but she had even written the proof. But besides Claire also reports Hal doubt on, whereupon Catherine angrily throws the remaining notebooks on the floor and leaves the room. Your self-doubt are so large that they can no longer distinguish between reality and imagination. She eventually recognizes the opinion of Claire as their own.

Catherine wants to finish the chapter and agrees to come up with Claire to New York. Hal, however, has now checked by two independent groups of experts to prove - and it's not managed to find even the slightest error. However, Catherine wants to hear about it. That Hal you now think is all well and good, but he would have better been done a few days earlier, it was now too late. The mistake he can not make up is that he did not trust and thus provided her with no proof of his love. While waiting at the airport Catherine finally comes to brood until they finally summarily decides to the airport to leave to Chicago - and thus to Hal - return.

Reviews

" John Madden, Proof ' is an exceptional thriller in terms of learning and heart, about the true authorship of a mathematical proof and the passion that revolves around him."

" The sparks do not jump about in John Madden's film version, with a screenplay by Auburn and Rebecca Miller and a pale Gwyneth Paltrow in the lead role. "

" Somewhere in the implementation of the stage to the big screen was David Auburn's powerful, excellent with the Pulitzer Prize play turned into a barren Gwyneth Paltrow - movie. "

"It howls, shivers, sighs and suffers Paltrow here again that you want to appoint them on the spot to Oberheulsuse and honor Maria Schell of world cinema - and yet the atmosphere of the film is just as pathetic as Paltrow's virtuoso playing as a yard-long and rattle drought madness prey. "

"That may be played terrific in some scenes, but overall nothing of a film and as credible as a Nobel Prize for Gerhard Schröder. "

" ... Director John Madden has an elegant, intelligent drama woven together by its very nature, increasingly rare in mainstream American cinema. "

" ... No sweet comedy but a touching, intense melodrama played in which Gwyneth Paltrow - after again ' Shakespeare in Love' under the Madden Director -. Perhaps only one, too often erupts twice in tears "

" Mediocre adaptation of a stage play, the emotion and passion indeed asserts, but does not find adequate images for these sensations in addition to decent lead performances. The confrontation with the mental illness turns out to be naive to be convincing. "
