Race Driver: GRID

Race Driver: GRID has been developed by Codemasters racing game, which namely the racing game series, Race Driver can be assigned, but no longer as the previous building on the DTM, GRID is therefore not a successor to the DTM Race Driver series. The game was released in Europe on May 30, 2008 for PC and game consoles PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo DS.

According to several reports, the multiplayer servers of the PC and PS3 versions were shut down in June 2011. The PC servers are now back online, the PS3 server will remain offline.

On August 8, 2012, the developer Codemasters announced the continuation Grid 2, which was released on May 31, 2013 PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.

Content

Race Driver: GRID currently has a fleet of 45 licensed cars, which are divided into 13 disciplines, and 89 routes in Europe, Japan and the United States. According to developers Codemasters other content (called Downloadable Contents) are planned for all platforms.

In addition to a high quality for the time of Releases graphics the game tried by a damage model to convince action-packed replays and the ability to go into the race without extensive practice. The latter is primarily supported by predetermined vehicle and route settings, rewind the possibility for a driving error and proceed at an earlier date, and a relatively heavy arcade controller.

The damage model includes both optical and technical damage to the vehicles, as well as individual circuit elements. To be able to repair on a pit lane and the possibility of the vehicle during the race was omitted, the vehicle is restored after a race ready.

In the career mode, which is based on 52 events plus seasonal taking place 24 -hour race, is given by sponsors specifications incentive to come as quickly as possible and fair to the finish; on money and time penalties will be waived, however.

The driving physics is not realistic, but implements realistic circumstances. Thus, for example, the vehicle skidded to be worn by excessive forces from the curve, roll over, jump over curbs, loose grip, and thus themselves and hinder opponents in the driving flow.

Single player mode

  • The career mode is the heart of the single player mode. A storyline is not the only player starts as an amateur driver without driver licenses and should be encouraged first to drive for other teams and thus to generate a certain amount of money for the foundation of his own team. Once your team is, you can earn with a team of colleagues and sponsorship contracts more money and points. The first three stages are divided into each of several events in Europe, Japan and the USA, which in turn are composed of several races. To purchase a license, a minimum amount of sponsorship points which are distributed according to sponsors met requirements to be gathered. Finally, the player may continue on the next higher level. Level Four consists of six international racing series, the last stage is at the pinnacle of the game - the 24 Hours of Le Mans - discharged. If the player is not just involved in a race series, it is for him to repeat free already driven. After a few races, depending on the chosen strength of the AI opponents and the active driving aids, a season is over. After each completed season you can participate as a driver for a different, but also for his own team in a chosen class at the 24 -hour race (or just skip this event ).
  • Race day mode it indemnifies the player with what car he drives the 89 routes on which. In many other games, the equivalent of an arcade mode is known: Without previous effort the players are all classes of cars and tracks to choose from.
  • In online mode, the player can play against up to eleven other riders. This mode is how the career also divided into championships, which connect different race series. Before a round, players vote at the meeting on the venue and then on the race series. Depending on the arrival of the finish or the order of retirement points are distributed at the end of each race, then the sum to a final ranking. Through an ELO like rating system so points are distributed to the players. However, not GRID: point deduction for a bad performance or unfair act is available in Race Driver.

Criticism

Especially active and fair online players is criticism that Codemasters have implemented no, or inadequate protective measures against cheaters and so-called " Crash Kids" ( players who do not actively participate in the racing scene but by reckless driving aware of other players hurt ). This problem was remedied by the complete shutdown of the PC and PS3 servers. Also there was no way to authenticate users, as the game was sold without a registry key or an alternative facility for the authentication, whereby an effective punishment of netiquette opponents was not possible. Furthermore, Codemasters is coming under fire to have broken with the DTM Race Driver series, but this is attributable to the Fanboyism, since as mentioned in Race Driver: GRID is not intended continuation of this series. Also, bugs and general weaknesses of the game are often taken - Some players refer to themselves as " charge beta testers ". Codemasters has, however, but also already published three patches that fix known problems, as well as to enhance the game.
