Renan

Renan is a municipality in the administrative district in the canton of Bern Bernese Jura in Switzerland. The former German race name is no longer used today.

Geography

Renan is on 907 m above sea level. M., 8 km east-northeast of La Chaux -de-Fonds (air line). The village is located in the western part of the upper Jura latitudinal Vallon de Saint -Imier, on the left side of Suze ( Suze French ), on the lower southern slopes of the Montagne du Droit.

The area of ​​12.6 km ² large municipality territory comprises the uppermost portion of the Vallon de Saint- Imier, which is drained by the Schüss. Of the 70.6 % inhabitants are French-speaking, 25.8 % and 1.1 % German-speaking Italian-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Renan peaked already in 1860. Economy

Renan was marked up in the first half of the 19th century mainly by agriculture. Then with the introduction of the watch industry began a rapid economic recovery. History

The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1178 under the name Runens. The chapter Saint-Imier had land in Renan. During the Thirty Years' War, the village was looted and burned.
