Robert the Strong

Robert the Brave (French Robert le Fort, Latin Robertus Fortis, sometimes translated as Robert the Strong, † September 15 or July 25 or July 2 866 at the Battle of Brissarthe ) was Count of Tours, Paris and Anjou. He came from the Rhine-Frankish family of the Robertians; He founded the branch of this family is referred to by name as Roberts family of Robertiner. All French kings from the House of Capet, and from the later French royal houses ( House of Valois and Bourbons ) were descendants Roberts in an unbroken male line. Thus he was the ancestor of the "House France " ( Maison de France), which they all belonged.

Life

Robert's father was Rutpert III. , Count of Wormsgau and in the Upper Rheingau, and his mother Wiltrud of Orléans. 837 to 840 after he had succeeded his brother Guntram Graf Wormsgau; then he went to the time of Charles the Bald ruled West Frankish kingdom, to the methods inherited from his mother's possessions in Orléans. In Wormsgau him his brother Walaho followed by IV.

852 gave him Charles the Bald the counties of Angers, Tours, and the position of a Laienabts the monastery Marmoutier at Tours; later ( 866) he was lay abbot of the monastery of Saint -Martin de Tours. He was for a then widespread practice as the patron of these abbeys the disposal of their income ( benefice ) without having to live there and deal with the spiritual guidance. 853 Charles appointed him to the king messengers ( missus dominicus ) for the regions of Tours ( Touraine ) and Angers ( Anjou ). When Count of Angers and Tours he exercised functions that corresponded to the position of a margrave.

858 he was one of the head of the noble opposition to Charles the Bald, Louis the German APPLICATIONS wanted the crown of the West Frankish Empire. At the same time in his direct responsibility, he was the opponent of Louis the Stammerer, son and future successor of King Charles, the Charles had equipped with the Dukat Maine. It succeeded the rebellious nobles to drive together with the de facto autonomous Breton, Louis the Stammerer from Maine. Ludwig returned to the court of his father. Thus, Karl had to resign because he was instructed for the defense against the Bretons and the Normans on the energy of the rebellious nobles. 861, King Charles reconciled with Robert and gave him the supreme military command for the area between the Seine and Loire ( Ducatus inter Ligerim et Sequanam, no " Duchy " in the later sense of the term ) and thus the responsibility for the fight against the Normans and Bretons. 862 Robert scored a major success in the fight against the Breton prince Salomon. Louis the Stammerer, who was inferior to his rival Robert by this development and no chance to recover the Maine saw more, rebelled against his father, allied with Salomon and devastated Roberts County Angers. Robert fell upon the retreating enemy, hit them and so won back the loot. Ludwig was forced to flee and threw himself ( in the year 862 ) his father. 863 submitted themselves and the Bretons.

865, there was a balance between King Charles, Louis the Stammerer and Robert the Brave. Robert Louis renounced in favor of the county Angers and received compensation for two Burgundian counties, Auxerre and Nevers. The following year, Robert fell in battle against the Normans at the Battle of Brissarthe.

Reviews

Because of his bravery, which he owed the nickname, Robert was regarded by his contemporaries; so he was referred to in the Fulda annals as " a quasi Maccabees in our times ". In modern research is emphasized that he was able to prevail in the struggle for power against the king's son Ludwig and ultimately emerged stronger from all conflicts. Thus, he created a condition that later his two sons could gain the kingship.
