Rocinha

Rocinha is a neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro in the southern part ( Zona Sul ) of the city between the neighborhoods of São Conrado and Gávea. The area evolved from a favela, but now includes mostly houses with legalized ownership. The social structure of the population and the still predominantly simple brick construction of the houses means that the term favela is also used by the recognition as an official district of Rio de Janeiro. Rocinha extends over a steep mountain slope, overlooking, about a kilometer from the beach, the city. There live there estimated between 62,000 ( latest official survey) and 250,000 people (estimate of the residents ).

Again and again, Rocinha is called the largest favela in Brazil or even Latin America. This can be countered by that alone in Rio several urban areas exist in which different favelas have grown so strong that they now form large closed " complexes " of favelas, which are visible from the outside only as a single favela. So that takes up about Complexos do Alemão and there Maré in the northern part Rios at the same density areas each have double or three times the area of a Rocinha. Such " Complexos " should not be limited to Rio also, it will be found rather in all mega cities in Latin America. Ultimately, the fame of the Rocinha is probably only due to their location in the affluent and famous by its beaches Copacabana and Ipanema South Zone of Rio.
