Governador Island

The Ilha do Governador (Portuguese for Governor Island) is the largest island in Guanabara Bay, a suburb of Rio de Janeiro. On the 42 km ² island are home to about 450,000 people.

One third of the island is covered from the International Airport Galeão / Antônio Carlos Jobim in Rio de Janeiro. The island is connected by a bridge with the Fundão Island, which in turn is connected to the mainland. A considerable part of the living area of ​​the island is covered by favelas. But there are also residential areas of the middle class.

The name of Ilha do Governador dates from the 16th century, when a governor during the colonial period built a house on the island. The Cariocas ( residents of Rio de Janeiro) call the island mostly Ilha ( island).
