Governador Island
The Ilha do Governador (Portuguese for Governor Island) is the largest island in Guanabara Bay, a suburb of Rio de Janeiro. On the 42 km ² island are home to about 450,000 people.
One third of the island is covered from the International Airport Galeão / Antônio Carlos Jobim in Rio de Janeiro. The island is connected by a bridge with the Fundão Island, which in turn is connected to the mainland. A considerable part of the living area of the island is covered by favelas. But there are also residential areas of the middle class.
The name of Ilha do Governador dates from the 16th century, when a governor during the colonial period built a house on the island. The Cariocas ( residents of Rio de Janeiro) call the island mostly Ilha ( island).
