Cidade de Deus ( for "City of God" in Portuguese) is since July 23, 1981, a district (administrative unit: Bairro ) in the west of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was founded in 1966 by the government Guanabaras in favor of the removal of the favelas around the city center of Rio de Janeiro.

CDD, as it is sometimes called by the inhabitants, was considered one of the most violent crime -ridden places of Brazil. 2009, the quarter -controlling drug gangs have been displaced by massive police operation.

In 2002, Fernando Meirelles and Lund led Kátia directed the film City of God (English for City of God ), which tells the story of two young men from the ghetto, which is based on the novel by Paulo Lins.
