Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Warsaw

The Archdiocese of Warsaw (Latin: Archidioecesis Varsaviensis, poln: Archidiecezja warszawska ) is an archbishopric in Poland. The Archbishop of Warsaw is also Metropolitan of the church of the same province, the bishoprics of Płock and Warsaw - Praga are assumed as suffragan sees. Episcopal Church St. John's Cathedral.

History

The diocese was founded on October 16, 1798 ( bull Ad Universam agri Dominici curam ), on 12 March 1818 Archdiocese (Bulle Militantis Ecclesiae Regimini ) and on June 30, 1828 (Ex impsita nobis ) raised to the Metropolitan seat. From 1946 to 1992 there was a personal union with the Archdiocese of Gniezno.

With the restructuring of the Polish dioceses in 1992 ( Totus Tuus Poloniae Populus Apostolic Constitution of 25 March ) this union was dissolved. First, belong to the Metropolitan Church nor the Archdiocese of Łódź and the diocese Łowicz. However, Łódź 2004 was itself Metropolitan seat with Łowicz as suffragan.

Bishops

Since April 1, 2007 Kazimierz Nycz is the reigning Archbishop of Warsaw. Emeritus Archbishop Stanisław Wielgus is.

In the Archdiocese continue to act Marian Duś ( Titular Bishop of Thenae, since 1985) and Piotr Jarecki ( Titular Bishop of Avissa, since 1994) as auxiliary bishops.
