Roman Catholicism in Sri Lanka

The Roman Catholic Church in Sri Lanka represents 7% share of the population in Sri Lanka a minority.

History

On November 15, 1505 verschlug a Portuguese fleet under the command of Lourenço de Almeida by a storm to the coast of Sri Lanka. With the permission of the King of Kotte Parakramabahu IX Dharma. Alimeida built a trading post in Colombo and a small chapel, which was dedicated to St. Lawrence. The fleet chaplain Franciscan friar Vicente celebrated on the first Catholic Mass in Sri Lankan soil. Over the next few centuries spread Portuguese, Dutch, and Irish missionaries of religion on the island, especially on the western and northwestern coast further. In some places the local Catholics make up half the population.
