Roman Catholicism in Uruguay

The Roman Catholic Church in Uruguay is part of the worldwide Roman Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the Pope and curia in Rome.

Organization

In Uruguay, approximately 2.315 million people profess (about 73 % of the population ) to the Roman Catholic denomination and are thus a part of the Roman Catholic Church world. The pastoral care of the Roman Catholic Christians in Uruguay is guaranteed by approximately 198 diocesan priests, 266 religious priests, 76 permanent deacons, as well as 1,099 nuns and 392 monks.

The patron saint of Uruguay is James, son of Alphaeus.

The Roman Catholic Church in Uruguay is organized as a church province in an archbishopric and nine belonging to suffragan dioceses.
