Sabah People's United Front

BERJAYA was a political party in the Malaysian state of Sabah and is Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah or Jelata Sabah People's United Front. The party went from a cooperation between Sabah's first Prime Minister Tun Fuad Stephens and the former Secretary General of the United Sabah National Organization ( USNO ), Harris Salleh forth. The party was since its establishment on 15 July 1975, a coalition partner of the Barisan Nasional, Malaysia's ruling coalition.

BERJAYA ruled Sabah eight years with 1976 until 1985. Tun Fuad Stephens was previously President of the United Pasok momogun Kadazan Organisation ( UPKO ), one based on ethnic principles party, which is the voice of the indigenous tribes of the Kadazan - Dusun and Murut in Sabah and the orang Asli understood in Peninsular Malaysia. The party was originally United National Kadazan Organization ( UNKO ) before it was renamed on September 16, 1963 in connection with Sabah's independence and the Malaysia Day in UPKO.

As BERJAYA 1976 won the state elections, Tun Fuad was appointed as the fifth Chief Minister of Sabah, the second time that he held this post. He succeeded Mohammad Said bin Keruak by the USNO. Tragically died Tun Fuad on June 6, 1976 in a plane crash in Kota Kinabalu, 44 days after his inauguration as Prime Minister. The accident became known as the Double Six Tragedy. Along with it also some other members of the government died. Harris Salleh took over the position in the sequence and thus became the sixth Prime Minister of Sabah.

In the elections in 1981 won again BERJAYA, this time with an overwhelming majority of 44 of the 48 seats. 1984 left the party member Joseph Pairin Kitingan, the party Parti Bersatu Sabah and founded the (PBS). The newly founded party repressed BERJAYA in the state elections in 1985 from the government.

In the elections in 1990, voters' support for BERJAYA was apparently melted away, because it does not even managed to gain a single seat. The party led then induced to establish the acting on the Malaysian peninsula party United Malays National Organisation ( UMNO ), Sabah a merger with the USNO. The party chairman of USNO, Tun Mustapha, Sabah was the first Chairman of UMNO, while Harris was only appointed consultants.
