Saint -Gorgon -Main is a town in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Saint -Gorgon - Main is located at 690 m above sea level. M., about 14 km north of the town of Pontarlier (air line). The village is located in the Jura, in the far northeast of the high plateau of Val d' Usiers, between the karst source of the Loue in the west and Mont Pelé in the east.

The area of ​​7.93 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The western part of the area is occupied by a gently undulating plateau, the average altitude of 670 meters. M. is and is partly covered by meadows, partly by forest. It forms the northeastern conclusion of the plateau of Val d' Usiers. In the West, this plateau is bordered by the deep erosion valley of the Loue, the communal land only goes up to the top of the escarpment. To the east, the municipality's area extends over a wooded hillside on the broad ridge that stretches from Mont Pelé to Cret Monniot. In geological- tectonic terms, this ridge forms an anticlinal folds of the Jura. With 1050 meters above sea level. M. is reached the highest point of Saint -Gorgon -Main here. The entire area has no surface watercourses, because the rainwater seeps into the karst underground.

The municipality comprises the two villages of Saint -Gorgon ( 690 m above sea level. M. ) and La Main (680 m above sea level. M. ), both located on the plateau at the western foot of Mont Pelé. Neighboring municipalities of Saint -Gorgon -Main Aubonne are in the north, the east, and La Chaux Ouhans in the south.

History

In the Middle Ages Saint -Gorgon was under the rule of Château Vieux. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France. Since time immemorial, La Main belonged to Saint -Gorgon. To avoid confusion with other municipalities of the same name, Saint -Gorgon was officially renamed in 1923 in Saint -Gorgon -Main.

Population

With 279 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Saint -Gorgon -Main is one of the small communities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1886 330 people were still counted ), a continuous population growth was recorded since the early 1960s again.

Economy and infrastructure

Saint -Gorgon -Main was well into the 20th century, a predominantly coined by agriculture, especially dairy farming and animal husbandry, as well as by the forestry village. In addition, there are today some of the local small business enterprises, including a sawmill and several craft shops. Meanwhile, the village has also changed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who engage in the larger towns in the vicinity of their work.

The village has good transport links. It is located near the main road N57, which runs from Besancon to Pontarlier. Further road links exist with Ornan Levier and Aubonne.
