Saint-Marcel, Haute-Saône

Saint -Marcel is a commune in Haute -Saône in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Saint -Marcel is located at an altitude of 260 m above sea level, 6 km west of Jussey and about 34 km northwest of the town of Vesoul (air line). The village is located in the extreme north- west of the department, in a depression on the high plateau, which belongs to the eastern foothills of the plateau of Langres, south of the Valley of Mance, at the western foot of the Bridelle.

The area of ​​7.10 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the plateau of Langres west of the upper Saônetals. The central part of the area occupied by the basin of Saint- Marcel, which is on average 260 m. It is used predominantly agricultural and dewatered to Ougeotte by the Ruisseau de Couaz south.

To the north, the land rises gradually to a plateau which separates the basin of Saint -Marcel from the Valley of Mance. At the height Rosières at the highest elevation of Saint -Marcel is achieved with 317 m. The southern boundary marks the hill of the Côte d' Enfer. To the southeast, the municipality's area extends to the slope of the conical mountain La Bridelle. In geological- tectonic terms, the grounds at Saint -Marcel consists of an alternation of sandy- marly and calcareous sediments that were deposited on the merits during the Lias ( Lower Jurassic ).

Neighboring municipalities of Saint -Marcel -sur -Mance Rosières are in the north, and Cemboing Jussey in the east, Montigny- lès- Cherlieu in the south and Vitrey -sur -Mance in the West.

History

The municipality of Saint -Marcel was settled very early. During excavations the remains of a Gallo- Roman settlement have been discovered. The origin of Saint -Marcel fancied probably founded in the 6th century Benedictine priory, which is, however, is properly documented only in the year 1109. In the Middle Ages Saint -Marcel belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in the territory of the Bailliage d' amont. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. Today Saint -Marcel is a member of the comprehensive 17 villages municipal association Communauté de communes du Pays Jusséen.

Attractions

The church of Saint -Marcel was rebuilt in the 19th century and has a bell tower from the 18th century. For remarkable Interior features include a gold-plated statue of the Madonna ( 16th century ) and other statues from the 17th and 18th centuries. Next to the church stands a cross that probably dates from the early Christian period.

Population

With 112 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Saint -Marcel is one of the small towns in the Haute- Saône. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1881 321 persons were still counted ), only small fluctuations were recorded since the early 1980s.

Economy and infrastructure

Saint -Marcel was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture ( farming, viticulture, fruit growing and cattle breeding ) embossed village. Today, there are some establishments of local small businesses. In recent decades the village has been transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who engage in the larger towns in the vicinity of their work.

The village is situated away from the larger passage axes on a secondary road that leads from Jussey after Fayl -Billot. Further road links exist with Rosières- sur -Mance, Noroy -lès- Jussey and Montigny- lès- Cherlieu.
