Samarqand Province

The province of Samarkand ( Samarqand Viloyati usbek. ) is a province in Uzbekistan. It covers 16,400 square kilometers, has about 2,854,755 inhabitants ( 2008). According to official statistics, the province mainly by Uzbeks ( 76%), inhabited Tajiks (9.7%), Russians (5.3%) and Tatars ( 3.3%). In addition, small groups of Turks ( 0.8%) and Ukrainians (0.7%) are located. Also living in the province of the oldest Jewish community in the former Soviet Union, whose membership is, however, the end of the 20th century drastically reduced by emigration.

The province is located in the basin of the river Zeravshan. The province is bordered by the provinces of Uzbekistan Jizzax, Navoi and Qashqadaryo and to the Tajik region of Sughd.

Management

Provincial capital and largest city of the province is the city of Samarqand. The province is divided into 14 districts ( tuman ) and divided the cities of Kattaqorgon, Oqtosh, Samarqand and Urgut
