San Martín Department, Mendoza

The department of San Martín (Mendoza ) is located in the northern center of the province of Mendoza in western Argentina and is one of 18 administrative units in the province.

It is bordered to the north and east by the department of Lavalle, to the southeast by the department of Santa Rosa, on the south by the Department of Junín and the west by the department of Maipú.

The capital of the department of San Martín (Mendoza ) is the eponymous San Martín.

Department and capital are named after General José de San Martín, who led the Argentine troops to independence.

Population

According to estimates by the INDEC, the population increased from 108 448 inhabitants (2001) to 110 162 inhabitants in 2005.
