Santo Tomé Department

The department Santo Tomé is located in the northeast of the province of Corrientes in the north- eastern Argentina and is one of 25 administrative units in the province.

In the north and west it borders on the Departamento Ituzaingó, on the north by the province of Misiones, in the east, separated by the Río Uruguay, Brazil and on the south by the departments General Alvear and San Martín.

The capital of the department of Santo Tomé is the same Santo Tomé.

Population

According to estimates by the INDEC, the population increased from 54 050 inhabitants (2001) to 57 921 inhabitants in 2005.

Economy

The department Santo Tomé is one of the prospering regions of the province, mainly because of the cultivation of yerba mate. The largest producer in the country, the model plant Las Marías is located here. Also of importance is the cultivation of rice and soy. The forestry focuses on the management further eucalyptus and pine forests for wood and paper industry.
