Sarapul

Sarapul (Russian Сарапул ) is a city with 101 381 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in the autonomous Republic of Udmurtia in Russia. It lies on the right bank of the Kama River, about 1250 km east of Moscow and 66 km south-east of the Republic capital Izhevsk. The nearest town Kambarka 33 km southeast of Sarapul.

History

Sarapul is known as a settlement since 1596 writing. At that time there was the wooden Church of the Ascension (Russian Wosnessenskaja Tserkov ), after which the village was originally called Wosnessenskoje. The local population was mainly of grain trade and fisheries. It is believed that the later passes through Sarapul name comes from the Chuvash language and literally means " yellow fish " ( сарă пулă ) means by which the once abundant here starlet could be meant.

In 1780, the settlement town rights. After that, the place was built for a general plan which has left its traces still to this day: With several historic church buildings, merchants and residences here (partly in Art Nouveau style ), and a former Observation Tower of the fire department are the most architectural monuments among the cities of Udmurtia. In the 19th century, mainly developed in Sarapul the leather and footwear industry.

In 1939, the city was included in the Udmurt ASSR, which represents the Russian Republic of Udmurtia since 1991.

Economy

Today Sarapul is known as an industrial city, which is dominated by engineering and radio electronics especially. A well-known operation is Sarapulski Maschsawod, 1941 during the Second World War from Baku moved here, now a well known manufacturer of oil and gas production facilities.
