Saraz

Saraz is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Saraz is located on 509 m above sea level, about 17 kilometers southwest of Ornans, 27 km south of the city of Besançon ( straight line ). The farming village extends in the Jura, on a Verebnungsfläche high above the valley of the Lison on the northern edge of the Forêt de Fertans.

The area of ​​6.02 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The central part of the area occupied by the grounds of Saraz terrace, which is on average 520 m and is about 500 meters wide and 1.5 km long. In the east and north, the terrain drops down to the deep erosion valley of Lison, whose slopes are lined in various places of striking Kalkfelswänden. To the south of the municipality of soil ranges on the broad back of the Forêt de Fertans, on the 610 meters, the highest elevation of Saraz is achieved. In the west, the municipality's area covers in extensive forest areas and into the Bois de Séchin and rock edge Rocher de Guerche.

Neighboring communities of Saraz are Éternoz the north and east, Nans -sous -Sainte -Anne in the south and Salins- les- Bains and muon in the West.

History

Various remains, including a tumulus from the Iron Age, point to a prehistoric settlement of the municipality of Saraz. The village developed probably in the 11th century and belonged to the lords of Scey. In 1260 Saraz came to Kastlanei Montmahoux. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. After the French Revolution Saraz came to the parish Nans -sous -Sainte -Anne, but was in 1807 united with that of Alaise. The villagers resisted a merger with Éternoz in 1973, so Saraz is a self-contained miniature community today. Since 1993 Saraz is a member of the comprehensive 19 villages municipal association Communauté de communes Amancey - Loue - Lison.

The chapel Sainte -Anne was built in 1624.

Population

With 11 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Saraz is one of the smallest municipalities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1881 101 persons were still counted ), only small fluctuations were recorded since the early 1980s.

Economy and infrastructure

Saraz was until well into the 20th century a predominantly coined by agriculture and forestry village. Even today, the inhabitants live on the merits of the activity in the first sector. Outside of the primary sector, there are almost no jobs in the village. Some employed persons are also commuters who engage in the surrounding larger towns of their work.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a secondary road that leads from Nans -sous -Sainte- Anne to Alaise.
