Seltso

Selzo (Russian Сельцо ) is a Russian independent city with 17,934 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in the Bryansk Oblast in south-west of central Russia.

Geography and climate

Selzo is located in the west of the country about 80 kilometers east of the border with Ukraine on the river Desna. The east adjacent Oblasthauptstadt Bryansk is 22 km away. Other nearby towns are Fokino (22 km northeast), Dyatkovo (30 km northeast) and Zhukovka ( 30 km northwest ).

The climate in the city is temperate continental with a mean annual temperature of 4.7 ° C and an annual rainfall of 610 mm. The coldest month is January with an average temperature of -8.8 ° C, the warmest is July with 18 ° C.

History

After the completion of the railway line Smolensk - Bryansk in 1868 Selzo was founded in 1876 as a settlement point on the same station. In the 1880s emerged in place with some wood processing and soap factories, the first industrial enterprises. A rapid population growth had Selzo in the 1920s and 1930s, because of the exodus of large parts of the village population in the times of collectivization. The rapid build-up city like residential area meant that Selzo 1938 to a urban-type settlement.

1939 artillery munitions factory was built in Selzo. However, this was not long in Selzo, because from October 1941 to September 1943 the place during the Second World War by the German Wehrmacht was occupied. Previously, the munitions factory from here to Nizhny Tagil and Kopeisk was evacuated.

In the postwar years the city was gradually rebuilt with new residential districts and public institutions. In 1990 Selzo was declared a city.

Economy and infrastructure

Main economic activities of the town are wood processing and chemical industries, and there is a milk factory and bottling plants for mineral water, which is obtained near the town of sources.

Selzo has a station on the railway line Bryansk - Smolensk Roslawl. In the city there is an art school, five libraries and a Palace of Culture.
